BRU LE LogoBRU LE v1.3.6 Released

Hi Folks,

As an extension to the mail support that was fixed in BRU LE 1.3.5, many of you asked to extend the support of SMTP mail transmissions through an ISP or other third party SMTP server by adding the ability to specify a non-standard SMTP port.  This has been added to BRU LE 1.3.6.

You may download the update to BRU LE from the standard download page.

From the release notes:

  • New Feature: BRU LE 1.3.6 now fully supports SMTP authenticated mail operations in both manual and scheduled backups.  This allows you to provide port information for environments when you need to contact your SMTP server on a port other than the default of port 25 - such as in environments where your ISP has blocked port 25 in an attempt to prevent SpamBOTS from sending mail directly.

Also, since a few of you have asked, when you save a mail password for SMTP authentication, it is saved in an encrypted format.

Thanks for using BRU LE!

Hi Folks,

We've just posted the next update for BRU LE - version 1.3.5.

This update is free for all BRU LE for OS X 1.3 users.

You may download the BRU LE 1.3. update from the BRU Demo page.

We sincerely appreciate the feedback that we've received and look forward to continuing to improve BRU LE for our customers.

  • Fixed an issue with scheduled jobs not sending emails. If you have current scheduled jobs saved, please select them, add the proper email addresses on the Schedule panel and re-save them.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the secondary email addresses assigned on the main backup panel (versus the Preferences) to not be saved when a job definition was saved.
  • Fixed an issue with scheduled jobs that could result in the wrong archive being verified on appended tape backups.
  • Fixed an issue with tape positioning for verify or restore when the tape block count exceeded approximately 1 million blocks.

BRU LE LogoBRU LE v1.3.4 Released

Hi Folks,

We've just posted the next update for BRU LE - version 1.3.4. While this update is mainly aimed at resolving issues reported by tape users, it is a recommended update for all users.

This update is free for all BRU LE for OS X 1.3 users.

As a separate note, for customers using OS X Leopard 10.5.0 - 10.5.2, we strongly urge you to update your systems to 10.5.3. While there are no specific improvements from the BRU LE perspective, 10.5.3 fixes a large number of usability issues that existed in the earlier versions of OS X 10.5.

You may download the BRU LE 1.3.4 update from the BRU Demo page.

We sincerely appreciate the feedback that we've received and look forward to continuing to improve BRU LE for our customers.

Thanks for using BRU LE!

TOLIS Group, Inc.

Updates in BRU LE 1.3.4:

  • Fixed an issue that prevented the restore process from prompting for the second and further tapes in a multi-tape restore.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause a restore from an appended archive to fail because the tape was being repositioned to block 0 instead of the actual block that contained the data that was selected for restore. This usually only occurred if the first backup set on the tape was a small backup set of less than 64M.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause importing unknown BRU LE tapes to fail if there was an archive that didn't have a matching catalog set on the tape.
  • Fixed an issue with the postflight installer script that could overwrite the contents of the root user's crontab.
  • Fixed a potential file overwrite condition in the crontab BRU scheduler entry creation.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed manual entry of non-5 minute increments in the schedule start times.
  • Fixed a block position offset error in the BRU engine. The BRU version has been updated to 17.1 build 1.16.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Restore Selection listbox to be minimized after a backup is completed. The listbox would be redisplayed if you drag the splitter control that was then positioned at the bottom of the panel back upwards.

BRU ServerBRU Server Supports Windows Server 2008

We are pleased to announce that BRU Server supports Windows Server 2008 systems as a client system on the network.  To BRU Server, any server-class system is treated as a node or seat, and no costly server-class licenses are required.

There is a small modification to Windows Server 2008 that needs to be done to be able to launch the BRU Server Agent Config application. The instructions to setup BRU Server Agent for Windows Server 2008 are in Knowledge Base article # 155.

BRU LEBRU LE 1.3.3 Released

An issue has been reported with the placement of disk-based archives created using the BRU LE's QuickBackup view.  The archive file was written into the default backup path (in Preferences) regardless of the path applied in the filename field.  Normally, you can simply enter a file name without a path and the file is written into your default path preference.  However, if you supply a fully qualified path - such as "/Volumes/Firewire 1/Backups/MySpecialBackup" - the file would be written into the default path instead of the supplied path.  This issue does not affect your backups if you use the Advanced view or perform backups via a scheduled job.

  • If you backup to disk using the QuickBackup view method, this is a mandatory update.
  • If you backup to disk using the Advanced view or via scheduled operations, this update is suggested.
  • If you backup to tape, as there is no impact on tape backups, this update is optional.

TOLIS Group Committed to "Green"

To help conserve natural resources by influencing the adoption of "electronic license" purchases, TOLIS Group has implemented a surcharge when hardcopy product packaging is requested. BRU product and documentation downloads are small, the documentation is crisp and is easily navigable in electronic format - unlike other backup tools that require multiple volumes. Our achievable goal is to ship 97% "green product" by the end of 2008.
